Full Teaching Scholarships Available

Study Italian at Graduate Level in the Sub-Tropical United States in the Master’s degree with a concentration in Comparative Literature or the Ph.D. Program in Comparative Studies, or as a non-degree-seeking student earning 18 graduate credits for teacher’s certification.

Full-time degree-seeking graduate students may be awarded a Graduate Teaching Assistantship with full tuition remission and a monthly stipend as they gain experience teaching beginning Italian language courses. Graduate students can also benefit from multiple funding opportunities for research, travel, conference participation, and for summers.

Students have the chance to participate in the International Symposium “Italy in Transit” and meet important personalities in lecture series and film festivals organized by the Italian Program. They also have the opportunity to take part in the editorial board of FACS. Florida Atlantic Comparative Studies Journal . Students can earn graduate certificates in Film and Culture, in Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies, in Linguistics, and in Environmental Studies.

Thanks to a strong collaboration with AATI (American Association Teachers of Italian) and IASA (Italian American Studies Association), our students enjoy a relationship with a national scholarly network that leads them to present at national conferences and publish articles in academic journals.

The Italian program is home of an active Italian American Studies research hub that feeds the Italian American oral history archive in the FAU library and the Italian American Memories Documentary Archive.

Candidates who have received Masters from FAU have continued to study in our Ph.D. in Comparative Studies or have accepted doctoral fellowships at prestigious universities such as Yale, New York University, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and Indiana University, among others. Graduates who decided to accept teaching jobs have positions in the best public and private schools in the area or teach at FAU.

The program welcomes American, Italian, and other international applicants. Applicants must have a firm command of the Italian language. A Bachelor’s degree with a major in Italian is preferred but not required.

Boca Raton is a growing and lively subtropical town, stretched between white sand Florida beaches and the wild swamps of the Everglades National Park. It is home to other universities and numerous cultural societies. This town has a long history as one of the most sought-after resort locations in Florida, and thus the second most beautiful place to study Italian, after Italy.

The deadline for all M.A. applicants is February 1 every year, or until space permits. The deadline for PhD applicants is January 15.
